Wits Bird Club
Welcome to the Witwatersrand Bird Club (a.k.a. Wits Bird Club) website.
The Witwatersrand Bird Club is the oldest bird club in South Africa having been established in 1947 and is a club which prides itself in supporting numerous local, national and international birding conservation initiatives and searching for, and enjoying the local birds of the region.
The Witwatersrand Bird Club is proud to be the oldest bird club in the BirdLife South Africa (BLSA) family and is based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The club is further represented by three satellite branches in the Johannesburg metropole by the East Rand, West Rand and Henley-on-Klip branches.
The Wits Bird Club is a Non Profit Organisation which welcomes members of any age, background or experience in birding – as long as they have one thing in common…a love for birds and a concern to conserve them and their environments. The objectives of the club include the promotion of, inter alia, the enjoyment, understanding, study and conservation of indigenous wild birds of South Africa.
Having been in existence for over 70 years the Wits Bird Club, services the needs of the most novice of birders, through to the advanced and famous birders and will continue to do so heading into the future.
An active program of events is always on the go by the club. They hold regular bird identification and photographic courses, conduct research and are involved in a number of recognised conservation projects. In addition the club organises outings (both local and further-a-field/abroad).
We invite you to peruse our website to find out more about who we are, like our Facebook Page and follow our clubs activities. We look forward to welcoming you as a member!
